The United States is sending a third aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, a major naval buildup that will put as many as 10,000 additional American troops within reach of Iran by the end of November — just as President Donald Trump weighs whether to resume bombing Iran once the midterm elections are over.
The deployment, first reported by The Wall Street Journal earlier this month, moved back into focus this week after Trump declared that the United States “could win the war tomorrow” and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described toppling Iran’s government as Israel’s “primary objective,” according to The Week. Together, the warships and the rhetoric have raised fears that the fragile lull in the US-Iran conflict may not last the winter.
A Third Carrier Sails for the Gulf
The nuclear-powered USS Theodore Roosevelt left its home port of San Diego on 27 September on what the Navy calls a scheduled deployment, according to US officials cited by the Journal. Sailing a day later was the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group — three amphibious ships carrying Marines of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Between them, the carrier strike group and the Marine force will add between 9,000 and 10,000 sailors, Marines and aircrew to the region when they arrive by the end of November. The Week, citing US officials, put the split at roughly 6,000 personnel with the carrier group and about 4,200 with the amphibious force.
The Roosevelt’s crew was stocked for an unusually long time at sea, according to senior Navy officials — extra food, supplies and even holiday materials were loaded before departure, a sign the Pentagon expects the ship to stay in the region well beyond a routine rotation.
Three Carriers in One Theatre — Maybe
Two American carriers are already operating in the Middle East: the USS George H.W. Bush and the USS George Washington, which arrived in mid-August after relieving the USS Abraham Lincoln following its record-setting deployment. Ships from the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group are also in the region, alongside roughly 20 Navy vessels enforcing the US blockade of Iranian ports and escorting commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — the chokepoint through which about a fifth of the world’s oil normally flows. If the Washington remains on station when the Roosevelt arrives, the US will have three carrier strike groups in the Middle East for the first time since April, before a short-lived ceasefire between Washington and Tehran collapsed. But officials caution that nothing is settled: the Washington may instead return to its home port at Yokosuka, Japan, in which case the Roosevelt would be replacing a carrier rather than adding to the force.
Either way, the reinforcements will join more than 50,000 US troops already stationed across the region — a posture that has also seen Washington extend the deployments of missile-defence units and the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, and rush two additional Patriot batteries to protect energy facilities in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Trump Keeps the Bombing Option Open
The naval movements are unfolding against open threats from the White House. In a Time magazine interview published on 1 October, Trump said it was “possible” the United States could resume bombing Iran after the November midterm elections if no deal is reached, and the Journal reported he has told aides he expects the strikes to resume that same month. “Now I have to make a decision: Either Iran signs the agreement, or it will no longer exist,” Trump said, according to Haaretz.
Days earlier, Trump rejected Tehran’s latest proposal for a seven-day ceasefire, under which Iran would have reopened the Strait of Hormuz and resumed nuclear talks in exchange for Washington lifting its blockade of Iranian ports. Witkoff Heads to St. Petersburg With Ukraine Peace Package
The temperature rose further on Tuesday, when Netanyahu said removing Iran’s regime was Israel’s “primary objective,” a day after he discussed Iran with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during an unannounced visit to Israel, according to The Week. Israel Elections: Trump Endorses Netanyahu for Re-election Trump, for his part, boasted this week that American forces “could win the war tomorrow” and “could leave today,” while insisting Iran must never be allowed to rebuild a path to a nuclear weapon.
Why November Matters
Analysts say the timing is the story. The Roosevelt group is not due in the region until late November — the same month Trump has privately earmarked for a possible resumption of strikes, and the first full month after the midterms remove the electoral cost of escalation. A third carrier would give the president more strike options, more air defence for US bases and Gulf allies, and more staying power than the two-carrier rotation that has already strained the Navy with near-record deployments and reported supply shortages.
The risks run in both directions, however. Iran has fired ballistic missiles at American warships in recent weeks, and its Houthi allies in Yemen remain active — a reminder of how quickly the regional war has spread beyond Iran’s borders. For now, officials describe a relative lull in direct US-Iran fighting. Whether it survives the arrival of the Theodore Roosevelt — and Trump’s November decision — is the question hanging over the region.
The Pentagon and the White House did not respond to requests for comment on the deployment, the Journal reported, and US Central Command declined to comment on related air-defence moves.
