US Petrol Hits Election-Day Record of $4.17 a Gallon as Americans Vote in the Midterms

US Petrol Hits Election-Day Record of $4.17 a Gallon as Americans Vote in the Midterms

US drivers went into midterm voting paying more for petrol than at any previous Election Day, with the national average for regular petrol standing at $4.17 a gallon on Monday 2 November, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). The figure passes the previous Election Day record of $3.80 a gallon recorded in November 2022, as reported in Moneycontrol’s midterm live coverage of the AAA data. Diesel was also near record highs, at $6.29 a gallon, compared with $5.35 in 2022. The timing matters. Cost of living has been one of the central issues of the 2026 midterm campaign, and fuel prices are one of the costs voters feel most directly, every time they fill up.

The numbers behind the record

AAA’s release for 2 November put the national average for regular unleaded petrol at $4.17 a gallon, down from $4.18 the previous day, $4.28 a week earlier and $4.41 a month earlier. A year ago, the same gallon cost $3.03. In other words, the Election Day record was set even though prices had eased slightly in recent days. The record is about the level voters faced as they headed to the polls, not about prices rising on the day itself. AAA also noted that crude oil prices above $100 a barrel were limiting how far pump prices could fall. For diesel, the $6.29 national average reported on 2 November was down 6 cents from the previous week, according to Al Jazeera’s report of the AAA figures, but still close to the highs seen during a year in which fuel costs have stayed elevated.

Two different records — do not confuse them

Two separate petrol records were reported on 2 November, and they measure different things. The first is the Election Day record described above: $4.17 a gallon on the eve of the 2026 midterms, above the $3.80 recorded around the November 2022 midterms. The second comes from a Financial Times analysis of federal data, reported by Newsmax and Al Mayadeen. It found that the average petrol price across Donald Trump’s second term as president was set to exceed $3.46 a gallon on 2 November, passing the previous highest average for a whole presidential administration, set under Joe Biden. That second record is an average over a presidency, not a single day’s price. The highest price recorded on a single day remains the peak above $5 a gallon reached in June 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The White House told the Financial Times that prices were higher under Biden once adjusted for inflation. Keeping those two records apart matters, because they answer different questions: what voters are paying now, and how this presidency’s average compares with the last.

Why prices are this high

Fuel costs have risen sharply since the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on 28 February 2026, a conflict that has disrupted oil shipments and energy infrastructure across the Middle East. On that date, the national average was $2.98 a gallon, according to Al Jazeera. Since Trump returned to office in January 2025, petrol prices have risen by more than a third, the Financial Times reported, despite his 2024 campaign promise to bring back $2-a-gallon petrol. Diesel has risen even more sharply over the same period, by more than 70 percent, to around $6.30 a gallon. None of that means every driver pays $4.17. National averages hide wide state differences, and some states remain well below the national figure. But as a national picture on the eve of a national vote, $4.17 is the number campaigns on both sides have had to reckon with.

Michigan in focus

Michigan, a key battleground state, was singled out in Moneycontrol’s live coverage as recording the biggest year-on-year increase in petrol prices. AAA Michigan put the state’s average at $4.55 a gallon on 2 November, $1.57 more than a year earlier, with a 15-gallon tank costing about $68 on average. Metro Detroit averaged $4.58 and Ann Arbor $4.59, according to AAA Michigan figures reported locally. That matters politically as well as economically. Michigan is one of the states where Senate and House races are being watched most closely, and where voters’ experience of rising prices is most direct.

What it means for voters

High fuel prices feed into almost everything else households buy, because diesel powers the trucks that move food and goods. When diesel is near $6.29 a gallon, transport costs rise, and those costs tend to reach shop shelves. For voters, the question on Election Day is not only what petrol costs today, but whether they believe it will come down, and who they blame for it staying high. The recent easing — 11 cents in a week nationally, on AAA’s figures — gives some relief, but at $4.17, that relief still leaves drivers paying far more than a year ago. What happens next will depend heavily on crude oil prices and on whether the conflict-driven supply disruption eases. AAA has warned that crude above $100 a barrel limits further falls at the pump, so a sustained drop below $4 nationally is not guaranteed by one week’s easing.

Frequently asked questions

What was the US petrol price on 2 November 2026? The AAA national average for regular petrol was $4.17 a gallon, with diesel at $6.29 a gallon.

What was the previous Election Day petrol record? $3.80 a gallon in November 2022, according to Moneycontrol’s reporting of the AAA data.

Is $4.17 the highest petrol price ever recorded in the US? No. The highest single-day national average was above $5 a gallon in June 2022. The $4.17 figure is a record for the period around an Election Day, and the $3.46 figure reported separately is a record average across a presidency.

Why are petrol prices high? Reporting links the rise to the war with Iran that began in February 2026, disruption to oil supplies, and crude oil prices above $100 a barrel.
