Gotham FC have won the NWSL Shield for the first time after beating Utah Royals 2-0 on Decision Day, the final day of the regular season, with Australia star Sam Kerr playing the full match. The win took Gotham to 61 points and top spot, securing home-field advantage through the playoffs as the defending champions chase another title.
How Gotham sealed the Shield
Guro Reiten gave Gotham the lead in the ninth minute, and Jaedyn Shaw sealed the win in the 80th minute. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger recorded her 11th clean sheet of the season. Gotham needed only a draw against Utah to secure the Shield, but finished the job with a win. The result completed a regular season of 18 wins, five defeats and seven draws across 30 matches.
What the Shield means
The NWSL Shield goes to the team that finishes first in the regular-season standings. Decision Day is the final round of the regular season, with all 16 teams playing at the same time, so the Shield race and the final playoff places were decided together. San Diego Wave finished second on 58 points. Gotham, who won NWSL Championships in 2023 and 2025, will now try to add a third championship in four seasons.
Kerr’s role in the triumph
Kerr played the full game for the home side, according to Football Australia’s Matildas review. It is her second NWSL regular-season title: she previously won a Shield with Western New York Flash in the league’s inaugural 2013 season, before her trophy-laden spell with Chelsea in England. She returned to the United States earlier this year to join Gotham.
Playoff bracket set
Gotham will host eighth seed Seattle Reign in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 8. Seattle clinched the final playoff spot with a 1-0 Decision Day win over Orlando Pride. Elsewhere, second seed San Diego Wave host seventh seed Utah Royals on Friday, November 6; third seed Washington Spirit host sixth seed Portland Thorns; and fourth seed Kansas City Current host fifth seed Angel City. The championship game will be played on Saturday, November 21 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
What happens next
Gotham enter the playoffs as top seeds, but the Shield alone does not decide the championship — that will be settled in the knockout rounds. Team news and any further playoff details will be confirmed closer to the quarter-final ties.
