OpenAI is about to make its frontier artificial intelligence models and its Codex coding agent available through Google Cloud, the companies said on Wednesday, in a move that deepens the partnership between two of the AI industry’s fiercest rivals.

The deal will bring OpenAI’s latest models — including GPT-6 Astra — to Google Cloud’s Model Garden. Customers will be able to buy the models through the Google Cloud Marketplace and apply their existing cloud spending commitments toward the purchases, according to a company blog post.

The confirmed facts

  • What was announced: OpenAI’s frontier models and the Codex coding agent will be offered on Google Cloud “in the coming weeks,” the companies said on October 21, 2026.
  • Which models: Google’s announcement names three — GPT-6 Astra (flagship, for coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research), GPT-6.1 Sol (near-Astra intelligence at lower cost) and GPT-6 Luna (fast, cost-efficient for everyday work at scale).
  • How buying works: Models are transacted directly through the Google Cloud Marketplace. Usage appears on a single Google Cloud invoice, draws down existing cloud commitments, and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans.
  • Google’s claim: The company says Google Cloud is now the only hyperscale cloud provider offering access to “all three leading closed source LLMs,” alongside more than 200 first-party, third-party and open models on one platform.
  • Regulated industries: Customers in sectors with strict compliance requirements can access OpenAI models through Google Cloud’s access controls, data governance tools and infrastructure to build agentic AI workflows.

The end of the Microsoft-only era

Until recently, OpenAI models were distributed exclusively through Microsoft’s cloud. That exclusive arrangement expired in April, and OpenAI has since expanded distribution to Amazon Web Services — and now to Google Cloud. Each of the three major hyperscalers is now vying for a share of the AI market by becoming a key distributor of top AI models.

The relationship between OpenAI and Google keeps getting more complicated. The two companies compete head-to-head in core AI products and search, yet the economics of building and deploying large models keep pushing them toward cooperation. Google struck a cloud deal with OpenAI last year to supply it with more computing capacity, and Google Cloud chief Thomas Kurian has told Reuters the platform welcomes any model popular with developers.

Why it matters

For enterprises, the deal lowers a practical barrier: companies that already spend heavily on Google Cloud can now buy OpenAI’s models without a separate vendor contract, on one invoice, with their existing commitments. For Google, it strengthens a strategy of positioning its cloud as a neutral platform with a wider choice of third-party models rather than relying only on its own. For OpenAI, it is another step in a deliberate enterprise push to sell its models to more corporate customers beyond its consumer products.

What remains uncertain

  • The companies have not given an exact launch date — only “in the coming weeks.”
  • Pricing details for OpenAI models bought through Google Cloud have not been disclosed.
  • Google has not named the “three leading closed source LLMs” it says it now carries.
  • It is unclear how Microsoft and Amazon will respond to Google landing the same distribution.
