Hughes Stays Perfect to Win Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as Baffert Lands Record Seventh Win

Hughes Stays Perfect to Win Breeders’ Cup Juvenile as Baffert Lands Record Seventh Win

Unbeaten colt Hughes stayed perfect in five career starts, winning the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Keeneland on Friday 30 October 2026 by 2 1/4 lengths and giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert a record seventh victory in the race.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Hughes covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.27 on fast dirt, holding off early pace pressure before drawing clear in the stretch. American History finished second, 2 1/4 lengths back, with Baffert’s other runner, Salahudin, a head further back in third.

A perfect season, capped in style

Hughes, a son of Into Mischief, had won his first four starts by a combined 24 1/2 lengths, including the Del Mar Futurity and the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita. The Juvenile was his third straight Grade 1 victory and his first test at two turns against the best juveniles in the country — and he passed it, turning back challenges at several stages before kicking clear in the final furlong.

Sent off as the 4-5 favourite in a field of six, Hughes paid $3.64 on a $2 win wager. The win almost certainly secures him the Eclipse Award as champion two-year-old male, and it was Baffert’s 22nd Breeders’ Cup victory overall, tying Aidan O’Brien for the all-time record.

Baffert’s record, and the Derby question

No trainer had won the Juvenile seven times before. Baffert’s previous six winners in the race include Game Winner, Corniche and Citizen Bull, and Hughes is his fourth unbeaten Juvenile winner.

The victory immediately puts Hughes at the head of Kentucky Derby conversations for 2027 — but history urges caution. Baffert has won the Kentucky Derby six times, yet never with a horse who also won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and only two of his previous six Juvenile winners even made the Derby: Game Winner, fifth in 2019, and Citizen Bull, 15th in 2025. The road from Keeneland in October to Churchill Downs in May is, as ever, the longest 75 miles in racing.

How many Breeders’ Cup Juveniles has Baffert won? Seven — a record, after Hughes’s win.
