Germany Gen Z Protests: Over 250 Arrested After Violent Night

Germany Gen Z Protests: Over 250 Arrested After Violent Night

More than 250 people were arrested across Germany after youth-led protests on Saturday, 31 October turned violent in the evening, police figures reported over the weekend show. What began as largely peaceful daytime demonstrations by the Gen Z Regelt movement in more than 30 cities ended with burning barricades, looted shops and injured officers in Hamburg, Frankfurt and Berlin.

The daytime marches drew tens of thousands of young people. Organisers put the turnout at about 160,000; police counts added up to more than 65,000. Protesters demanded greater investment in education, health and climate action, relief from rising living costs and an end to plans to revive compulsory military service.

Violence after dark, in three cities

Police said the main demonstrations themselves were largely peaceful, but smaller groups staged separate evening demonstrations in several cities. In Hamburg, violence broke out after the main demonstration ended at about 5 p.m. local time on Saturday. Police detained 120 people after black-clad and partly masked protesters built burning barricades near the city’s central bus station. Eleven officers were injured in Hamburg.

In Frankfurt, masked groups not involved in the main Gen Z demonstrations smashed shop windows and looted businesses, including a gun store. Police seized blank-firing pistols from that store. Frankfurt police made 54 arrests, recorded 87 criminal complaints and issued 1,225 orders to leave the area. More than 100 police officers were injured in Frankfurt alone, and officers faced fireworks and Molotov cocktails, some thrown from ambush.

In Berlin, police temporarily detained up to 56 people during an evening demonstration in the Mitte district, separate from the earlier peaceful gathering at the Brandenburg Gate. There were also clashes in Cologne, where police seized Molotov cocktails and emergency hammers from masked men, and Cologne’s police chief condemned the violence, saying extremists had disrupted peaceful demonstrations.

Ministers blame left-wing groups; Frankfurt weighs a ban

Germany’s interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt, blamed violent left-wing groups and troublemakers for the Frankfurt rioting and promised harsh penalties. Hesse’s interior minister, Roman Poseck, said the 54 people arrested in Frankfurt, aged 13 to 29, were predominantly German nationals — a detail that complicates claims about who took part.

Frankfurt is now considering banning the next Gen Z demonstration, planned for 20 November, and Poseck wants it stopped. By early Sunday, the situation had largely calmed across the affected cities, while police continued investigating and assessing property damage.

What the numbers do — and do not — show

Readers should treat the totals with care. Early reports on 1 November put the national figure at more than 200 arrests; a later tally carried by dpa put it at at least 250. Sources also use “arrested”, “detained” and “temporarily detained” differently, and city figures were still being reconciled. This article therefore reports each city’s figure separately rather than presenting a single precise national count.

The arrest totals are also the key new development since Emadan’s report on the night itself, which noted that no national arrest total had yet been published. The daytime demands — education funding, living costs and opposition to conscription — remain unchanged, and the movement’s next test is whether the planned 20 November demonstration goes ahead.
