Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon in his first-ever marathon on Sunday, November 1, finishing in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second, while Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won the women’s race for the second time in 2:24:36. Nearly 60,000 runners took part in the race, the 50th time it has run through all five boroughs of New York City.

Men’s race
Almgren, 31, a successful half-marathon runner making his debut over 26.2 miles, pulled away from Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa in the final mile to win by 13 seconds (Crippa 2:06:14). Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo was third in 2:06:26, edging defending champion Benson Kipruto into fourth. Almgren is the first Swedish man to win in New York and the first runner to win on debut since Gebregziabher Gebremariam of Ethiopia in 2010. His time was the third fastest in the course’s 50-year history, and the top seven finishers all recorded times among the ten fastest ever on the course. American Zouhair Talbi was sixth in 2:06:43, the fastest time ever by an American man on the New York course.

Women’s race
Chepkirui, the 2024 winner, pulled away from defending champion and fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri in the final 150 metres to win in 2:24:36. American Jessica McClain surged past Obiri in the final strides to finish second in 2:24:42, six seconds behind Chepkirui and one second ahead of Obiri (2:24:43) — the first American woman on the New York podium since 2018.

Why it matters
The race was the last World Marathon Major of 2026. Almgren arrived after a strong track and half-marathon career; Chepkirui’s win restores her to the top after finishing third in New York last year. McClain’s podium ends an eight-year wait for an American woman in New York.
