Samsung Electronics has posted a record third-quarter operating profit, driven by robust demand for artificial intelligence chips, even as investors remain wary about how long the AI spending boom can last.

The world’s top memory chipmaker said on Thursday, October 29, that operating profit rose nearly ninefold to 107.4 trillion won ($80.04 billion) for the quarter ended September 30, up from 12.2 trillion won a year earlier and in line with its earlier estimate. Revenue rose 127% from a year earlier to 195.3 trillion won ($145.6 billion).

AI demand drives the record

The result extends a remarkable run for memory chipmakers, whose high-bandwidth memory and storage products sit at the centre of the AI infrastructure build-out. Samsung echoed rival SK Hynix, which reported strong earnings and an upbeat outlook on Wednesday, in saying the chip supply shortage would deepen next year — a signal that demand continues to outrun production even as new capacity comes online.

Samsung also announced it would pay 30 trillion won in total cash dividends for the third quarter, or 4,601 won per share, returning a large share of the quarter’s windfall to shareholders.

Shares fall despite the record

The market reaction was cautious. Samsung’s stock fell more than 6% to about 226,000 won in late-morning trading in Seoul on October 29, as investors weighed whether AI-related earnings can keep their current momentum. The reaction mirrors a broader debate in markets: chipmakers are reporting extraordinary profits today, but the durability of AI capital spending — and the returns it will eventually generate — remains an open question.

Why it matters

Samsung’s result is a bellwether for the global technology supply chain. As the largest memory chipmaker, its order books and outlook shape expectations for device makers, cloud providers and AI labs alike. A deepening supply shortage next year would keep chip prices elevated and could constrain how fast AI infrastructure can expand, even while it supports chipmakers’ margins.

For South Korea, the result also underlines how central semiconductors have become to the national economy, with Samsung and SK Hynix together anchoring an export engine now powered largely by AI demand.

What happens next

Attention turns to whether the shortage does deepen as Samsung expects, and to the company’s next shareholder return policy, which it has said it will announce alongside detailed plans for the rest of 2026 after a board meeting scheduled for January 2027. The next test will be fourth-quarter results and any change in memory pricing as new supply arrives.
