Sir Patrick Stewart, the Shakespearean stage actor who became a global star as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” films, has died at the age of 86.

Stewart died on Wednesday, October 28, at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced on Thursday, October 29, in a statement shared on his social media accounts. The statement said he died “in the loving care of his beloved wife Sunny following a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia”.

“He has been held in the warm embrace of family and friends, surrounded by live music, prayer, tears, laughter, and the kind of profound emotion that only he could inspire after a lifetime of devotion to us all,” the statement said. “We will forever cherish the peaceful ease and reflection on his face, an enduring reminder of his invincible grace.”

His spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, confirmed the death. Stewart is survived by his third wife, musician Sunny Ozell, and by his two children, Daniel and Sophie, from his first marriage to actress and dancer Sheila Falconer.

From Mirfield to the Enterprise: Stewart was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, and rose from a working-class background to the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he built his reputation as a classical stage actor from the 1960s onwards. He was knighted in 2010 for his services to drama. It was not until he was 47 that he found mainstream fame, cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, which ran from 1987 to 1994. He played Picard in 176 episodes over seven seasons, in several “Star Trek” films, and again in the streaming series “Star Trek: Picard”, which began in 2020 when he was 79. His Picard catchphrases — “Make it so” and “Engage” — became part of popular culture. “As the seven seasons of TNG went by, the distinction between Jean-Luc Picard and Patrick Stewart became thinner and thinner, until it was impossible for me to know where he left off and I began,” Stewart told the Guardian in 2022. “So much of what I believed and felt went into that show.” He had debated taking the role at all: his longtime friend Ian McKellen had advised him to stay in the theatre rather than move into American television science fiction.

Professor X, Shakespeare — and a stage career that never stopped: In 2000 Stewart took on his second defining screen role, as the telepathic Professor Charles Xavier in “X-Men”. He returned to the role across the original trilogy and later films, including “Logan” in 2017, and reappeared as Xavier in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in 2022. Away from franchises, his stage career continued in parallel: acclaimed performances as Claudius and Macbeth, a one-man adaptation of “A Christmas Carol”, and West End and Broadway productions of Harold Pinter’s “No Man’s Land” and Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” alongside McKellen. His 2007 portrayal of Macbeth earned him his only Tony Award nomination. “His sonorous voice and singular talent will forever be synonymous with indelible performances in every genre,” his family’s statement said. “He explored the human condition in all its poetic complexity and brought hope not only to the far reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but into science fiction’s most iconic final frontier aboard the Starship Enterprise.”

Tributes from co-stars: Hugh Jackman, who starred as Wolverine alongside Stewart’s Professor X in seven “X-Men” films, wrote: “We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days.” Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey in the “X-Men” films, said: “Patrick was a legend. One of the greats. I had the pleasure and honor of working with him over several decades.” Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William Riker alongside Stewart on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, said: “There is no one on this planet that I have acted with or directed more often than my late great friend Patrick Stewart.” Marvel Studios also paid tribute, saying Stewart brought Charles Xavier to life “with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans”. In lieu of flowers, the family asked for memorial contributions to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s caregiver resources.
