Israeli strikes killed at least eight Palestinians, including five police officers, in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to medics and Gaza’s Hamas-run interior ministry.

Medics said three people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City. The interior ministry said the five police officers were killed in another strike in western Khan Younis, in the south of the enclave.

The Israeli military said it struck several militants in Khan Younis, without giving further information. It did not immediately comment on the Gaza City strike, Reuters reported.

Two strikes, two locations

Al Jazeera, citing hospital sources, gave further detail on both attacks. A drone attack killed five people and wounded several others in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, where the interior ministry said police officers were targeted as they carried out their duties.

In northern Gaza, at least three Palestinians, including a four-year-old boy, were killed in a drone attack on Gaza City’s Rimal neighbourhood, sources at al-Shifa Hospital told Al Jazeera. The Taj Mall was also targeted, the outlet reported.

The Israeli army told the AFP news agency that it was targeting “a terrorist” in southern Gaza. No Israeli comment on the Gaza City strike was reported at the time of writing.

Ceasefire under strain

The strikes come despite a US-brokered ceasefire that took effect in October. At least 1,500 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since the ceasefire, according to the territory’s health officials, while Israel says four soldiers have been killed in the same period.

Al Jazeera separately reported that another person died on Sunday from wounds sustained during a previous attack. That death is reported separately here and is not added to the eight killed in Sunday’s two strikes.

Hamas condemned the latest attacks as a “deliberate war crime”, denouncing what it called the “horrific massacre” of police officers and the “bombardment of Gaza City”. That characterisation is Hamas’s allegation; it is reported here as its statement, not as an established finding.

Palestinian authorities say more than 74,000 people have been killed in Israel’s assault on Gaza since Hamas-led fighters killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

What remains unclear

Several details were not confirmed at the time of writing: the identities of those killed in Gaza City beyond the reported four-year-old boy, the number of wounded in either strike, and whether Israel will comment on the Gaza City attack. Casualty figures in Gaza are reported by medics and Gaza health authorities and have not been independently verified by Emadan.
