Eurozone inflation climbed to 4.0% in October, its highest level in more than three years, as a surge in energy costs pushed prices further above the European Central Bank’s 2% target.
The flash estimate from Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office, showed annual inflation in the 21-country euro area rising from 3.8% in September to 4.0% in October. It was the fourth consecutive monthly increase and the highest reading since September 2023, when inflation stood at 4.3%.
The result matched economists’ expectations in a Reuters poll. It also means prices are now rising at twice the pace the ECB aims for over the medium term.
Energy drives the increase
Energy was once again the main driver. Energy prices were 20.8% higher than a year earlier, up from 18.9% in September and their fastest annual increase since December 2022. Energy prices rose 1.4% on the month.
The rise reflects continued pressure on fuel and gas costs amid the war in the Middle East, with Brent crude trading well above $100 a barrel during October, according to market reporting of the release.
Services inflation, the largest component of the consumer price basket, edged up to 3.3% from 3.2%. Food, alcohol and tobacco prices rose 1.6%, up from 1.3% in September, while non-energy industrial goods rose 1.2%, up from 1.1%.
Core inflation holds steady
A more closely watched measure, core inflation, which strips out volatile energy, food, alcohol and tobacco prices, held steady at 2.5% in October, in line with expectations and unchanged from September.
Inflation excluding energy alone also held steady, at 2.3%. Unprocessed food prices, however, accelerated to 4.6% from 4.0%.
The steady core reading is a small comfort for policymakers: it suggests the energy shock has not yet fed through broadly into underlying price pressures. Analysts cited by Reuters cautioned that indirect effects from expensive diesel and natural gas tend to linger as higher transport and production costs seep into other goods and services.

What it means for interest rates
The ECB held interest rates steady last week. The October figures are likely to firm market expectations of another rate rise in December, Reuters reported, with analysts noting headline inflation is now clearly above the ECB’s September baseline scenario.
The ECB expects inflation to hold above 4% for much of the first half of 2027 before falling quickly towards the low twos as high year-earlier figures drop out of the annual comparison, according to Reuters’ account of the bank’s outlook.
Country picture mixed
The bloc-wide figure hides wide differences. Among the largest economies, inflation accelerated in France to 3.8% from 3.4%, in Italy to 5.6% from 4.2%, and in the Netherlands to 3.3% from 3.0%, according to reporting of the flash data. Germany was the main exception, with inflation easing to 2.8% from 3.3%.
Lithuania had the highest rate in the euro area at 6.1%, unchanged from September, followed by Bulgaria at 6.0%.

What happens next
These are flash estimates: they are based on early data and are subject to revision. The full October inflation release, with complete data for the euro area and its member countries, is scheduled for 18 November 2026.
Until then, the key question for households and policymakers is whether energy costs stay elevated through the winter, and whether the steady core rate holds as those costs work through the economy.
Frequently asked questions
What is eurozone inflation?

Why did inflation rise in October?
Mainly because energy prices rose sharply, up 20.8% on a year earlier, while services and food prices also edged higher.
What is core inflation?
