Connor McDavid claimed another place in the NHL record book on Wednesday night, collecting an assist in a 13th consecutive game to start the season as the Edmonton Oilers shut out the Calgary Flames 4-0 at Rogers Place.
McDavid set up two goals in the win, passing the 12-game season-opening assist mark previously shared by Sebastian Aho, Ken Linseman and Wayne Gretzky. The Oilers captain now leads the NHL with 36 points — eight goals and 28 assists — through 13 games.
How the record fell
McDavid’s record-setting assist came on Edmonton’s first goal. He fed Mathieu Joseph with a cross-ice pass at 7:46 of the first period, giving the Oilers the lead with their first shot of the game.
Mattias Ekholm doubled the lead in the second period, and Kasperi Kapanen redirected a McDavid pass across the crease for a power-play goal 55 seconds into the third. Alex Formenton scored 21 seconds later to complete the 4-0 win. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also recorded two assists.
Jarry’s shutout, Flames’ streak ends
Goaltender Tristan Jarry made 24 saves for his first shutout of the season and the 24th of his NHL career. The win moved Edmonton to 9-2-2 and snapped a two-game losing streak, while Calgary fell to 5-7-0 and saw its four-game winning streak end.
Calgary starter Devin Cooley stopped eight of nine shots before leaving after the first period with a lower-body injury following a collision with Edmonton forward Colton Dach. Dustin Wolf made 20 saves in relief.
Why it matters
The record is the latest milestone in a remarkable start for McDavid, whose 36 points are the NHL’s best total so far this season. The previous 12-game mark had stood since Aho matched it in 2018-19, and before that since Linseman in 1985-86 and Gretzky in 1982-83.
McDavid himself kept the focus on the result. “We wanted to win the game, that was first and foremost,” he said after the game. “I thought the game was pretty solid, it’s what we needed to do tonight.”
What comes next
Edmonton will try to extend both its winning run and McDavid’s assist streak in its next game, while Calgary will look to regroup after losing its starting goaltender and its winning streak on the same night.
