The top United States commander in the Middle East briefed President Donald Trump on military options for Iran at the White House on Thursday, in a rare in-person visit, as Washington weighs resuming major combat operations against Tehran, The Wall Street Journal has reported.
Adm. Brad Cooper, who heads US Central Command (CENTCOM), was joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, the Journal reported, citing US officials and other people with direct knowledge of the meeting. Other cabinet members also attended, and the discussion covered other topics, including the continuing US blockade, according to the report.
The briefing followed a White House session on Wednesday in which the military officers met Vice President JD Vance, one person familiar with the discussions told the Journal.
A rare in-person briefing
Cooper rarely briefs Trump in person, the Journal noted, so Thursday’s meeting could signal that the United States is moving closer to significant military operations. He last met the president in July, when the two huddled with Hegseth and Caine aboard Air Force One in Delaware.
A Pentagon spokesperson and a spokesperson for CENTCOM declined to comment on the meeting, according to the Journal. Newsmax, reporting the Journal’s story, said the Pentagon referred it to the White House for comment and the White House did not immediately respond.
No decision to launch new strikes has been announced. The article below therefore reports what the Journal says was discussed, not a confirmed plan of attack.
What the report says about timing
Trump administration officials have told Arab Gulf states to be prepared for a short, intense campaign after the midterm elections, the Journal has previously reported. The midterm elections are on November 3, when all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are contested.
Trump himself raised the possibility of renewed military action at a rally last week, referring to the major US-Israeli bombing campaign against Iran earlier this year, known as Operation Epic Fury. “We may do another little Epic Fury,” he said. “Or they’ll agree.”
The Pentagon has spent recent weeks laying the groundwork for a possible new bombing campaign, sending additional air defences, munitions and supplies to the Middle East, according to the Journal, while repositioning some personnel away from facilities considered vulnerable to retaliation.

Iran’s warnings, and the diplomatic track
Iran has threatened publicly and in private diplomatic communications to attack a broad array of US and Gulf country targets in the region in response to any US strike, the Journal reported.
At the same time, a diplomatic track is running in parallel. The Journal reported that Vance has engaged one of Iran’s most powerful hard-liners in an effort to revive peace negotiations, and that Vance sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei at Trump’s direction. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Thursday that Washington’s “carrot-and-stick approach” would fail to sway Tehran, and stressed that progress towards peace talks rested on accepting Iran’s seven core conditions, according to reports of his remarks.
Some lawmakers have expressed alarm that Trump could soon renew hostilities with Tehran. Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on Wednesday during a Middle East Institute event in Washington that he had discussed plans for renewed military operations during a classified briefing, Newsmax reported. Murphy was quoted as describing the plan as “insane” in its reported short duration — his characterisation, not a confirmed operational detail.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Confirmed by the reporting: a White House meeting took place on Thursday, attended by Cooper, Hegseth, Caine and other cabinet members, following a Wednesday meeting with Vance, and the Journal’s sources say military options for Iran were presented. Not confirmed: any decision to strike, any date for action, or the specific options presented. The Pentagon and CENTCOM declined to comment, and the White House has not announced a decision.
That distinction matters. A briefing on options is a step in decision-making, not a decision itself, and the administration’s public messaging has kept both a military campaign and a negotiated outcome on the table.
