YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was detained from his residence in Gurugram’s Sector 56 on Saturday morning, hours before the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) planned protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, police sources said.

Around 50 Delhi Police personnel arrived at Rathee’s home in the morning and took him into preventive detention, according to reports. The YouTuber, who commands about 33 million subscribers on YouTube, had publicly announced his participation in the demonstration just a day earlier.

Why Dhruv Rathee was detained

Police sources said Rathee was detained as a preventive measure ahead of the CJP’s protest, for which Delhi Police had denied permission citing security concerns. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) are in force across the New Delhi area.

A Gurgaon police officer said personnel had tried to persuade Rathee not to attend the protest, but he refused and continued posting on social media that he would be at the venue. “We detained him in the morning,” the officer said, according to reports.

The detention drew a sharp response from the CJP, which demanded Rathee’s “immediate release”.

Part of a wider crackdown

Rathee’s detention is part of a sweeping preventive crackdown across the national capital. Around 2,000 people were detained on Saturday as police moved to stop protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar, where the CJP had called a demonstration demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke was detained from inside his aircraft after landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, along with party convenor Saurav Das and leader Ashutosh Ranka. The party’s legal head Ratna Singh was also detained, while former Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas and activist Tushar Gandhi were picked up in Delhi and Mumbai respectively.

Authorities shut entry and exit at 45 metro stations, cancelled trains and imposed checks at Delhi’s borders. Police have also detained more than 600 people with criminal records across the capital’s 15 districts as a preventive step, PTI reported.

Who is Dhruv Rathee

Rathee, 31, is one of India’s most-followed digital creators and a prominent critic of the Narendra Modi government, with 19.2 million followers on Instagram and 3.3 million on X in addition to his YouTube audience. He arrived in India from Germany earlier this week and had joined a CJP protest in Bengaluru on October 8.

On Friday evening he posted a video on X announcing he would attend Saturday’s demonstration in Delhi — hours before police arrived at his door.

Whether Rathee will be released during the day or held through the protest remains unclear. Delhi Police had not issued an official statement on his detention at the time of publication.
