New Delhi is bracing for a major opposition show of strength on Monday as the INDIA bloc marches to the Supreme Court, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged “vote chori” (vote theft) and an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Leaders of the opposition alliance, led by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, are expected to assemble at the Connaught Place–Barakhamba Road junction at 1:30 PM IST before marching toward the Supreme Court to submit a memorandum to the Chief Justice of India.

  • INDIA bloc’s “Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy” assembles at 1:30 PM IST at Connaught Place–Barakhamba Road.
  • Demands: CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and a halt to the SIR of electoral rolls.
  • CJI Surya Kant has declined to meet the opposition delegation, citing pending cases.
  • Six metro stations shut 6 AM–4 PM; heavy security across central Delhi.

‘Daro Mat’: Gandhi’s Call to March

The march, dubbed “Chalo Delhi – March for Democracy” by the Congress, is the opposition’s fifth protest in the capital since October 6 seeking Kumar’s removal. On Sunday, Gandhi urged citizens, youth groups and civil society to join, writing on X: “We will march together, with love, brotherhood and patriotism. Daro mat (don’t be afraid).”

Key opposition figures including Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav are expected to take part, according to the Deccan Herald. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will also join the delegation.

CJI Declines Meeting

The opposition’s plan hit a wall before it began: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined requests from Gandhi and Kharge for a meeting on Monday. According to Live Law, the CJI said questions concerning the voter roll revision and the chief election commissioner were already pending before the Supreme Court, making it inappropriate to discuss sub-judice matters. He clarified that the opposition was free to approach the court through the judicial process, and that the court could not intervene in the functioning of the executive on its “administrative side.”

Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal said the party respected the Chief Justice’s decision but would go ahead with the march. “This is not only an agitation, but it has become a movement,” he said.

Capital Under Tight Security

Security has been tightened across central Delhi. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation shut entry and exit at six stations — Patel Chowk, Janpath, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Central Secretariat and Barakhamba Road — from 6 AM to 4 PM. Rapid Action Force and CRPF personnel have been deployed alongside Delhi Police at Barakhamba Road and near Mandi House, and traffic police issued advisories warning of diversions.

The capital has been on edge for days. Protests against Kumar began on October 2 over the SIR exercise and changes to Form 6, used for voter registration. In a separate development on Monday morning, Delhi Police registered an FIR against AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, following a complaint alleging disruption at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. Congress workers also gathered at Himachal Bhavan in the morning, shouting slogans against the CEC, ANI reported.

Echoes of the CJP Protest

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janta Party — whose Jantar Mantar protest earlier this month ended in mass detentions — is expected to approach the Parliament Street police station at 10 AM to seek permission for another demonstration.

The opposition alleges large-scale irregularities in the electoral rolls, including wrongful deletions, and has accused the Election Commission of failing to act. The Commission has not publicly responded to Monday’s march call.
